FORT MYERS- Bishop Verot High School answered any questions about whether a long layoff would hurt the Vikings within the first five minutes of their 45-17 victory over LaBelle on Friday in a Class 4A-Region 3 semifinal at Viking Stadium. Jaidin Brown returned the opening kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown, that gave the Vikings a 7-0 lead, just 14 seconds into the game. After forcing a three-and-out, the Vikings took advantage of good field position, finishing with a Josyln Mire touchdown. A rare Maynard Blackmon lost fumble led to Azizi finding a wide-open Brock Gee in the middle of the field for a touchdown. The Vikings coughed up a ball late in the first quarter that LaBelle converted into an Enrique Hernandez field goal. Bishop Verot lead 21-3 heading into the 2nd quarter.
The teams traded scores with under two minutes left in the first half first with a Bryce Hall touchdown to cut the lead to 21-9. LaBelle’s Enrique Hernandez’s extra point was missed. Junior running back Terry Lindsey, who missed a handful of games this season, made his return with a 39-yard reception that quickly put Verot in field goal range. Logan Mcleod connected on a 36-yard field goal with 15 seconds to go in the half. Bishop Verot took a 24-9 lead heading into halftime.
Tequon Chatman lit up the Cowboys in the second half as Verot (9-2) won it’s first state playoff game, as he scored twice in the 3rd quarter that gave the Vikings a 38-9 lead, with just a little over 3 minutes to play in the 3rd.
Bishop Verot sophomore quarterback Jacob Azizi threw for 291 yards and three touchdowns, in the 45-17 win. “We’ve been very vanilla the last five or six weeks. We haven’t been full strength offensively,” said second-year Verot coach Josh Vogelbach
“Every day we came to practice with the same mentality – 1-0 – and we knew that we would have to practice hard every day to make it to the playoffs.” Bishop Verot sophomore quarterback Jacob Azizi said.
Bishop Verot (9-2) moves onto play Cocoa in the Class 4A-3 Regional Finals, while LaBelle finishes the season at 8-4.
